Each year, the holiday season brings you yuletide cheer and an over-abundance of Christmas albums from pop to Celtic and every genre in between. But here’s a record that stands out above the rest.

Darius Rucker is out with his first ever Christmas album Home for the Holidays, and he’s sticking to his adopted sound of country music.

The 12-track album provides us with holiday usuals like “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Winter Wonderland” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” but the artist formerly known as Hootie’s signature soulful country twang backed with a bit of rockabilly provides us with a fresh, enjoyable approach. Standouts include the brand new piano-infused song “What God Wants for Christmas” and the toe-tapping “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” duet with the recent country music adoptee, Sheryl Crow.

If you listen carefully, you’ll hear the backing vocals of Rucker’s three children, Daniela Rose, Caroline and Jack, on the tongue-and-cheek “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” Rucker says of the collaboration, “It was great to have them on there. I beam with pride. I love my kids, and they’re awesome human beings, and just proud to have them on my record and proud to call them my kids.”

“I’m hoping it’s one of those records that people just love.” Rucker said of Home for the Holidays.” I want fans to love it and play it for their kids. I’m hoping that there’s some kid who is two years old today, and when he’s 14 and they ask him what reminds him of Christmas, he says, ‘The Darius Rucker Christmas record.’ That would be awesome!”

Be sure to keep a lookout for Rucker’s 4th solo country effort early next year. His first single from the project, “Homegrown Honey,” is already making its way up the charts.
