Pharrell Williams and Cara Delevingne CC The World
At Chanel’s Métiers d’Arts show in Salzburg last night, the world was introduced to its newest model/insta-verse powerhouse turned singer, Cara Delevingne who showcased her voice for the first time alongside Pharrell Williams in Lagerfeld’s short film Reincarnation.
Watch this video and you will remember a happy time when imagination fueled romantic scenes in film (that’s what I did anyway). Williams and Delevingne play a bellhop and a waitress, who at the stroke of midnight magically turn into the Emperor of Austria Franz Joseph I and his Empress Elizabeth or “Sisi” and dance together into the wee hours of the morning in the most amazing less-is-more display of love and affection.
At dawn when Williams awakes, he is once again a bellhop. He is greeted by Chanel herself (played by Geraldine Chaplin). “Before I leave, I’d like to ask you a question,” she says with the air of arrogance we know and love her for. “Where did you get that jacket?” Surprised that he is actually being spoken too, Williams responds “They only made it for me.” And responding only in the way Chanel can, she says “well I’m going to make it for me!” And that creation became her labels signature jacket.
We can’t propose to know why Cara was chosen for this project, but it can’t be an accident that Empress “Sisi” of Austria was a popular social maven of her time and traveller of the world. She was also cheeky by nature and known to defy the rules of the house she married into. Sound familiar? Then of course there is her beauty. “Beauty isn’t hard to define,” sings Pharrell as he takes her hand in their romantic waltz. “It is there inside when you open your eyes… Could she be the girl to help me C C the world.”
I would like to propose that Ms. Chanel did end up CC-ing the world…in more ways than she will ever know.
So kick back, and relax for seven minutes and 46 seconds (yes its ok to watch a video that long) – and be prepared for some fun-loving nostalgia.
Oh and in case you want to stay in that warm and fuzzy place, take a look at this clip from Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr’s The King and I that I just had to pull up right after I watched Reincarnation. Holding hands used to mean so much… sigh.
